Woodtick

Closeable Doors

Two objects in Woodtick (the entrances to Wally's house and the bar) have unused images attached to them. The image for Wally's door is just a purple box (which is meant to represent transparency), while the image for the bar hatch is mostly purple but with something strange peeking through in the corner (more on that in a moment).

I think this is evidence that these two buildings might have originally had proper doors that you could open and close. Wally's door even has an "open" verb defined for it, but with no actual code. This is something we can (technically) see in-game. If we try to open Wally's door, then what Guybrush should do is either say something like "it doesn't seem to open", or just walk through. Instead, he does nothing. This is because the game sees that the door has a special function for the "open" verb and tries to run it, which causes nothing to happen.

Flickering Lantern

Alright, so what's going on in the corner of that unused "hatch" image?

SCUMM objects were all drawn in the same image file before being packed into the game, which means we're probably seeing the corner of a different object that happens to be overlapping with wherever the art for the "hatch" object used to be before being cut.

So, what is this other object that we're seeing, then? It doesn't match any actual objects in Woodtick.

It's actually a perfect match for the sky next to the lantern above the bridge, but the light coming from the lantern is a tiny bit different.

This is strange, because the lantern is just a part of the background, and has no object associated with it. Maybe at some point in development, the lantern would flicker? That would explain why the light looks different in the tiny section of the image that we can see.

MI1 Guybrush

In the demo, this room contains an unused costume that appears to show Monkey Island 1 Guybrush climbing over something. It's actually the exact same animation he uses when climbing out of the crow's nest on the Sea Monkey.

Maybe it was used as a placeholder for Guybrush climbing into the window?

Inn Object

The demo contains a third unused object image, in addition to the two building entrances we already looked at. This one is attached to the entrance to the inn, and it's particularly big.

It's possible that this would also have been a closeable door, but I think it's unlikely because the image covers far more of the background than it would need to, and the actual doorway isn't even visible.

Like with the bar hatch, we can see artwork for other objects overlapping with the place where this one used to be. This time, it's the sign with the shovel, though I don't know why there's two of them.

I have no idea what this image could possibly have been. Maybe the lights in the inn would have turned off after Largo's gone?
